Some of you might know Kate Levitt as one of the two amazing percussionists for Baltimore's tribal jam out band Teeth Mountain. I'm going to guess more people know her now as the musician on Judge Judy whose cat was crushed by a TV. Kate accuses fellow Baltimore musician Jonathan Coward (aka Shams)of the drunken flattening of her cat after he threw a television at her wall. Teeth Mountain's Andrew Burt and Narwhalz were also there to be yelled at. It's as hilarious as it sounds:

Teeth Mountain is playing a show tomorrow @ Death By Audio, which should be excellent. Shams will be in town on Marth 8th for the Pictureplane afterparty @ Glasslands Gallery in Brooklyn. I have no idea what the hell Narwhalz does anymore.

STATEN ISLAND -- As the four members of In Buenos Aires started their musical engines at a recent Martini Red gig, it was difficult to tell whether things were going very wrong — or very right.

Sawtooth soundwaves sizzled as a video projector turned on, and a large, yawning explosion of reverberating tonal weirdness enveloped the audience. Was it a horrible sound check? A technical difficulty?

Then the drums kicked in at full gallop, and Staten Island’s newest psychedelic rock quartet launched a set that would satisfy, frustrate and impress the listener at any given moment. At times it was musical, at times noisy, but whatever it was it was all part of their plan — or lack thereof.

“We have a start-point, a mid-point and some sort of end-point,” said the band’s talkative and capable drummer, AJ Pantaleo, 26, of Rosebank, explaining the band’s process in advance of the show. “It’s about 85 percent improvised.”

A young band that shows promise, In Buenos Aires is unique among its peers in the local community of indie rockers, and that’s OK with them. Their songs are amorphous, hulking jams with no vocals that can disorient the audience as often as it gives them something to grasp onto. The group plays a unique round-robin gig Jan. 15 at Cargo Cafe with Les Vinyl and Paragraph, and it will be an interesting highlight of In Buenos Aires’ stranger qualities, as each band trades off song-for-song. But they’ve got some locals excited.

“They’re the best new band on Staten Island,” says Dave Elliott, the DJ who books at Martini Red. “I told them they sounded like CAN, and they said,’Who is CAN?’”

Unlike those seminal experimental Kraut rockers, this local quartet has recent forms of electronica and industrial metal to influence their playing — but they are also a band of disparate parts creating intriguing music. Bassist Linda Dolan, 24, of New Dorp, owns and runs her own dance school, and is a fan of popular groups like Tool and Nine Inch Nails. Others list noise rock and indie electronica like Dan Deacon as influences.

“Dance is a lot like playing music,” says Dolan. “If you want to be good at it, you have to practice, all the time.”

Luke Chiaruttini, 21, of Grasmere, whose gaggle of synthesizers takes a while to set-up, studies music at SUNY Purchase.

“The creation of new sounds is integral to what I do,” says the skinny keyboardist, whose lack of volume in conversation is easily compensated for on stage. “I started out playing guitars, but synths were more malleable. I could change the quality of the sounds more easily.”

The group’s drawn-out, grove-based jams can be pushed forward by any member, but guitarist Mike Dibenedetto, a.k.a. Mike Hayes, seems like a leader of some sort. He modifies his guitar amp, talks about building his own pedals, and generally advocates for going your own way.

“Music’s not supposed to be like that, with all these descriptions” says the red-haired 26-year-old musician, when asked where he sees the band in the psychedelic genre of music. “Everybody’s got their own opinions, but as a musician, you don’t worry about that. You worry about what you’re playing.”

Thus far, In Buenos Aires seems to be following that mission with promising results. Live recordings of their performances are making the rounds via free downloads from their blog. The band says not to expect a fancy studio recording; if that comes, it will be a natural, organic result. But they’d rather just do it live.

“There’s never really been a set goal,” says Hayes. “It’s honestly more like performance art. We read off each other’s vibe, and take the songs where they need to go.”

STATEN ISLAND, NY--I recently met three-fourths of the band In Buenos Aires at Cargo Cafe to discuss what kind of deep sea creature best represents the band, and how their music comes to be. I'll tell you more about that later in an AWE feature, but for now, local original music fans have a chance to see a varied but sensible bill of bands at Martini Red tonight. Firemonkey, as you may already know, is a power trio known for its high octane rock 'n' roll songs--fast, short, and bombastic. In Buenos Aires is a good foil; the band constructs long, loosely improvised jam outs that work thanks to the strength of the players. These bands make sense together for me--something about both groups is visceral, loose, and unapologetic about their creative offerings. I like that. Maybe you will too.
